The Unique Angles of 'On A Hot Summer Day in Gorakhpur'
1- Unlike in Hinduism, the caste system is prohibited in Islam, but Muslims in Indian subcontinent clandestinely practice caste system, which is contrary to the last Sermon by Prophet Mohammad. This revelation about caste system begs a debate among the Muslims as well as others to discuss how deep rooted the problem actually is?
This book also identifies that the ancestors of most Muslims in India were originally Hindus. Recently, this debate has gained ground, and the book will add vigor to the debate. This book for the first time reprimands the Indian Constitution for discriminating on the basis of religion, and introduces the concept of Dalit Muslims, which will be unique.
This book for the first time brings the saga of Momin Conference to the surface. Momin Conference was instrumental in contradicting the Muslim League’s or Jinnah’s version that “all” Muslims subscribed to Two-Nation theory, during partition when Pakistan was created.
2-In early twentieth century, Muslim nobility in Gorakhpur considered their legal right to collect discriminatory House Taxes from low caste Muslims. This untold story is brought to the surface, for the first time.
3-The incident at Chauri-Chaura acted as a catalyst to the freedom movement. After that unfortunate event, Gandhi rather than siding with the lowest strata of society, sided with the upper echelons. Hence, Gandhi in a way failed to meet the expectations. This aspect of Gandhi was overlooked in the past, expect for now. Role of Gandhi will be re-evaluated based on his approach to the issue of social justice. In India, the issue of social justice has gained ground in the last couple of decades.
4-In general, Muslim politics of mobilization had focused on trivial issues, like the Minority status of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), rather than on the core challenges of bread, security and shelter. Along with the Muslim leadership, this book also chides the founder, Sir Syed Ahmad khan, who was against educating the lower strata of the Muslim society. This revelation will be an eye opener to many.
5-The challenges which law abiding Muslims faced during the unfortunate incident on 9/11 in United States, and the inspirations of the general populace in Kashmir are a part of the plot.
6- For the first time a story is centered on Gorakhpur.
7- And last but not the least, this book maintains the suspense till the end.
