The dictionary definition of a Mom mentions maternal affection and protective care; nowhere does it stipulate that this pertains exclusively to human beings. Love is universal.
As the caretaker of your pet, you have felt all of the emotions that other mothers feel – fear, tenderness, love, heartbreak, joy, anxiety, anger, impatience, exasperation, affection, protectiveness – the list is endless. You have an overwhelming desire to keep your pet safe and free from harm. When she/he is sick or injured, you fuss over her/him endlessly. When she/he is in pain, your heart aches for her/him. When your pet is happy and playful, your spirits soar too.
Moreover, when you hold your animal or pet her/him you never think, “If only you were human, you’d know how much I love you.” She/he does know. What’s more, the love you give to her/him is returned to you tenfold. Your pet can’t tell you how she/he feels with human words, but she/he tells you by her/his countenance.
Love for any creature, be they two-legged or four-legged is a wonderful, amazing thing.
The world is a much kinder, gentler place when there is an abundance of love flowing freely, whether it’s to an animal or to a human being.
