Death Vally: The Land War Gripping Honduras

One interesting revelation from this article comes from comparing the words of Jaime Guzmán, head of the Investigative Unit of Violent Deaths in the Aguán, a unit set up by the Attorney General's Office, and Dinant's Director of Operations, Roger Pineda. Guzmán is reported to have said that after a year of investigations "the unit doesn’t have enough evidence to bring those responsible for the 2010 deaths to justice, adding that the investigation has been unable even to access the weapons used during the El Tumbador killings." While Pineda is reported to have said that the company "has yet to be approached by the unit."

This underlines the suspicions of the campesino movements that the investigative unit is nothing more than political theater and collusion on the part of the Honduran government and Dinant. Part of the IFC's audit and charges in withholding $15 million from Dinant was the fact that there had been no credible investigations of the 120+ violent deaths in the Aguán. It is well speculated that Facussé went to his crony, Oscar Fernando Chinchilla, the Attorney General of Honduras, and ordered that a fake investigation be implemented. This seems to bare out in light of after a year of investigations which have included more than 15 exhumations of campesino remains, and Dinant hasn't even been approached by the investigators. It also highlights the dog and pony show of the "conflict resolution" that is being conducted by the IFC/CAO.
