Dear users - the Service is down (May 2023)
Elon Musk bought Twitter and decided to drop free API access (supposedly to deal with bots) We are interrupting this service until as the charged amounts presently being asked do not make business sense JumboTweet is a free service, and we believe that all the data powering Twitter that is user generated should be freely available to users. This highlights the necessity to preserve free access across time user's access to their data.
Being Smart About Using Your Smartphone
By Sara Blau
Time to pull out some parenting books, I think, feeling desperate. My kids are rowdy and squabbling, and can’t sit still at dinner. I must be doing something wrong.
I look up at them in frustration, and then I realize, No kidding. I’m on my phone, distracted. Of course, they’re going bonkers.
And then I think, I don’t need to read any parenting books. I simply need to destroy my smartphone.
Not necessarily.
After the Jews sinned with the Golden Calf, Moses was devastated and shattered the Tablets containing the Ten Commandments. In this week’s Torah portion, G‑d commands Moses to carve out new Tablets, and then gives a surprising command. Instead of banning gold or warning the Jews about its dangers, G‑d instructs the Jews to take their gold and use it to build a Tabernacle for Him as an atonement for their sin.
Because everything G‑d created can be used in a constructive or destructive manner, and it is up to us to use it appropriately. By instructing them to build the Tabernacle as an atonement for the Golden Calf, G‑d was teaching the Jews what gold was truly created for: to build a home in which to serve Him.
The same is true with everything else in the world, including technology.
Misuse is not a signal that we should eradicate it; rather, we should redirect its use. Instead of destroying my smartphone, I can learn to use it at times when it doesn’t take me away from my children. And even when it is an appropriate time, I can use my phone to improve relationships and learn something new—the way it is meant to be used.
Thoughtstream: Today, I will set boundaries with technology and determine how to utilize it for a holy cause.

Sara Blau is a teacher and extracurricular director at Beth Rivkah High School. She is a mother of two children and the author of several children“s books.
The age of 2 has notoriously been dubbed “The Terrible Twos” as toddlers begin to assert their independence. As if on cue, my sweet granddaughter has become adamant about doing things “all by herself.”
One of her most popular refrains is “Self do it!” Her solution for tasks that she’d prefer to push off, such as bed time, is simply, “Mommy, go away!”
But while one minute she is stridently trying to do things on her own, the next minute she’ll eagerly snuggle up to have a book read to her. She will declare an appreciative “tank you” when I dress her doll after her own frustrating attempt, but will stubbornly refuse to hold my hand while climbing the staircase. The look of victory in her eyes after she reaches the top is priceless.
From about six months of age, the seed for independence is sewn and continues to grow, for some of us fiercely. Independence doesn’t mean that we don’t need others, but rather, that we contribute our fair share, our own efforts, to our relationships and life’s circumstances.
In this week’s Torah portion, we read the second paragraph of the Shema prayer, while last week’s Torah portion contained the verses of its first paragraph.
We are obligated to recite the Shema, a central prayer, every morning and evening. It contains fundamental beliefs about loving and serving G‑d, learning and teaching Torah, and practicing mitzvot. Much of the second paragraph, however, seems to repeat the first, with a few important differences.
The second chapter speaks about the reward and punishment we will earn by following the commandments, whereas the first leaves this out entirely. In addition, the first chapter addresses the Jewish people in the second person singular (you), as individuals, while the second chapter speaks to us in the second person plural (you, collectively).
There are two aspects to cultivating our relationship with G‑d, and each is reflective in the respective paragraph of the Shema. The first is G‑d’s gift of connection to us, without which we would never be able to have a relationship with Him. The second is our efforts and struggles, using our finite capabilities—our intellectual and emotional selves—to reach higher and come closer to G‑d.
Reward is only mentioned in the second paragraph because by definition, a reward is something that must be earned by our own merits, not bestowed as a gift. Only once we sweat for something can we really experience the joy of its accomplishment.
Moreover, by struggling to improve our moral character, we become fuller beings. In working on any new endeavor, we develop other parts of our personality—resilience, determination, empathy, generosity. We become not singular beings with one gift, but pluralistic, multidimensional beings.
The second chapter of the Shema teaches us that while the fruits of our labors may be less glorious and less brilliant, they are more real.
In recent years, high schools and colleges have put rigorous math requirements in place for students. Students now are required to complete courses in algebra, geometry, and trigonometry before they can graduate. College business students have to complete a course in statistics before they can graduate with a degree in business.
The motivation behind these rigorous math requirements is perhaps well intentioned and understandable. But are the requirements practical? Author Andrew Hacker, who wrote the book, “The Math Myth,” doesn’t think the requirements are practical at all.
Hacker said, “I don’t see any rational reason for this at all. What I’m suggesting is that at least there should be other options, alternatives, instead of this rigid math curriculum for everyone.
Hacker went on to elaborate further during a recent interview on the PBS Newshour.
ANDREW HACKER: The goal is to have everybody do a full menu of mathematics, up to and including calculus. One of the myths is that every one of us is going to have to know algebra, geometry, trigonometry in the 21st century, because that’s the way a high-tech age is going.
It’s a total myth. At most, 5 percent of people really use math, advanced math, in their work.
Hacker thinks the rigorous math requirements are contributing to high school and college dropout rates.
ANDREW HACKER: One out of every five of our citizens has not finished high school. We have a 20 percent dropout rate. It’s one of the highest in the developed world. And the chief academic reason for this dropout rate is algebra in the ninth grade.
Hacker thinks rigorous math requirements are to blame for high college drop-out rates as well.
ANDREW HACKER: Forty-seven percent of people who start a four-year college do not get a degree. That’s a very high dropout rate, close to half. Chief academic reason, freshman math course, which people fail and don’t make up. And why don’t we ask ourselves, look at the talent we’re losing.
Hacker and many others think basic math and consumer math proficiency should be encouraged more. After all, people will use basic and consumer math every day of their lives.
We’re talking about percents, averages, calculating loan payments, mortgages, overtime, and so forth. Once a person has become proficient at basic math operations, curiousity will often lead that person to want to pursue higher math.
ANDREW HACKER: We use math, the term, indiscriminately. I think we teach arithmetic really very well up through grades, let’s say, five or six. We do it. But then, instead of continuing with arithmetic to what I would call adult arithmetic, or sophisticated arithmetic, we immediately plunge people into geometry and algebra.
At a minimum, we may want to revisit the rigorous math requirements that were implemented over a decade ago, not because we want to lower standards. Rather, we should do because it will actually increase math skills, and it will discourage students from dropping out of school.
