And he said to them, "Go, eat rich foods and drink sweet drinks and send portions to whoever has nothing prepared, for the day is holy to our Lord, and do not be sad, for the joy of the Lord is your strength."
NEHEMIAH (8:10)

וַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶם לְכוּ אִכְלוּ מַשְׁמַנִּים וּשְׁתוּ מַמְתַּקִּים וְשִׁלְחוּ מָנוֹת לְאֵין נָכוֹן לוֹ כִּי קָדוֹשׁ הַיּוֹם לַאֲ-דֹנֵינוּ וְאַל תֵּעָצֵבוּ כִּי חֶדְוַת יְ-הֹוָה הִיא מָעֻזְּכֶם
נְחֶמְיָה ח:יּ


va-yo-mer la-hem l'-khu ikh-lu mash-ma-neem u-sh'-tu mam-ta-keem v'-shil-khu ma-not l'-ayn na-khon lo kee ka-dosh ha-yom la-a-do-nay-nu v'-al tay-a-tzay-vu kee khed-vat a-do-nai hee ma-uz-khem

The special obligation to provide for the poor on the festivals is described in the Bible (Deuteronomy 16:11,15) and encouraged here in today's verse from Nehemiah, who spoke to the Children of Israel on the first day of Rosh Hashanah (Nehemiah 8:2). Bring in the new year with a generosity of spirit and bring joy to the poor
