BEFORE OBAMA © 2015

Many Americans have short memories. Some have short memories on purpose. They conveniently forget what it was like in 2008 when President Obama took office. He inherited a mess.

Here’s a refresher. The economy was in shambles, thanks to the Republicans, who now claim to have all the answers. They’re the ones who got the country involved in an unnecessary and costly war that destabilized the Middle East and created the power vacuum that has allowed al queda and ISIS to fill.

When Obama took office, the housing market had collapsed. The stock market had tanked and your 401(k) was in trouble. The banking industry also was in trouble. Major banks and financial institutions were on the verge of going under.

At the same time, the auto industry was on life support. Gas prices were heading towards $4 and $5 a gallon depending on where you live. Our country was spending a over a billion dollars every day in Iraq, not to mention Afghanistan. Soldiers were dying and being crippled in an unnecessary war that lasted over a decade. The employment rate was dismal.

Look at those issues today. The economy is stronger. The housing market has come back. The auto industry has roared back and has hired thousands of new employees. Gas prices are below $2 in many states.

The United States no longer imports most of its oil. It is now an oil exporter. The banking industry and the financial markets are stronger so is your 401(k). The nation no longer is spending billions a day in Iraq and soldiers aren’t dying everyday. Today is much better than then.

Whereas presidential hopefuls like Donald Trump talk a good game while appealing to the worst in us, President Obama has delivered without embarrassing the United States or appealing to our base emotions or prejudices.

No president is perfect on all issues, and the president isn’t perfect on all issues. But to use Ronald Reagan’s standard, ask yourself, “Are we better off today than we were in 2007.
