Bill Cosby was charged and freed on a $1 million bond Wednesday on a felony sexual assault charge . The charge is the first following a number of rape allegations. Cosby is alleged to have used Quaaludes to have sex with countless women. However, his attorney, Monique Pressley, cast doubt of the validity of those allegations.
Pressley said, "The deposition said that there was use of Quaaludes, which was done often in the '70s. It was considered a party drug called 'disco biscuits' and it was something that was done frequently, not just by Mr. Cosby but other entertainers."
Pressley said Quaaludes were not made after the ‘70s and that allegations Cosby still had stashes of the drug 30 and 40 years later and used them on his accuser in 2004 are not credible.
Very few people can qualify as perfect. We’re all flawed. Of course, some people are more flawed than others. Enter Hitler, terrorists, the men who killed Emmett Till, mass murderers, and thugs. Bill Cosby doesn’t come close to being that flawed.
Today, Bill Cosby is regarded as a pariah by some. But you can’t press a rewind button, go back in time, and delete all the good that man has done.
As for the Cosby Show and its legacy, you probably couldn’t count the now famous actors, writers, directors, and producers who got their breaks on the Cosby Show.
Nearly every black actor who did a sitcom, movie, or soap got their breaks on the Cosby Show, or were inspired by the show. He also gave breaks to white, Asian, and Hispanic actors. That’s saying something.
Fast forward. Did Cosby rape all those women who are now coming out of the woodwork? It’s fair to say something sexual did go down—but rape? Rape is a horrible, horrible crime. But you don’t wait 15, 20, or 30 years to get angry, or to seek legal justice.
In all likelihood, what happened was a quid pro quo arrangement. Women looking for fame and entrée into show business probably saw Cosby as the means to that end.
Key questions Cosby’s lawyers might ask women alleging sexual misconduct are: 1. You were aware Mr. Cosby was a married man, is that correct? 2. So, you went to a room or hotel with this married man, just the two of you. Is that correct?
What happened with Cosby and his accusers was probably a version of the old Hollywood “Casting Couch.” Women would often exchange sexual favors to get roles in movies, plays, television shows, or a career boost. It still happens in the music and the movie/television industry, and everybody knows it.
If Cosby did do all that is alleged, it proves that in all of us, there is good and evil. Many people will jump on the bandwagon and only see Cosby as evil. Others will cling to the good.
Some younger Blacks, at least some of them, resented Cosby because he dared to criticize hip-hop culture and behavior that he thought was hurting the black cause. And they rejoiced over his troubles. They thought he was a hypocrite for lecturing them about values and morality while he himself had allegedly date raped a slew of women.
Who knows? Maybe Cosby was a hypocrite. But that doesn’t invalidate the good he did before he became an alleged hypocrite nor does it invalidate the criticisms he aimed at some of the younger Blacks who now rejoice over his troubles.
Cosby is a very rich man. What if he had fallen on hard times and was now living a destitute life. Do you think women would be coming out of the woodwork making allegations against him if there was no money to collect? Could money be the magnet that has attracted women with 20, 30, and 40-year rape allegations? What does your rational mind tell you?
