Whitney Young, a 1960s Civil Rights leader, once said, “You don’t get black power by chanting it.” Similarly, you don’t prove “Black Lives Matter” by chanting it.
If black lives truly matter, we need to prove it, not to outsiders but to ourselves. Right now, the only time we act like black lives matter is when a white cop kills a black person. That’s the only time we protest, and that’s the only time we chant, “Black Lives Matter.”
Why is it we have fixated on white cop killings of Blacks, but we have ignored black on black killings? The number of black on black killings is so numerous, it’s as if a civil war is going on in black communities. Each year Blacks are killing thousands of Blacks in carjackings, home invasions, gang conflicts, petty arguments, drug deals, boyfriends killing girlfriends, etc.
If black lives matter, let’s take the struggle and the protests where the threat is greatest, in the ‘hood. If black lives matter, let’s stop being so quick to “go off” on each other for the most trivial and the dumbest of reasons. If black lives matter let’s declare a ceasefire on each other.
