@BlueShieldCA #Care4K I am joining other families (#ApproveSudol #Parity4JP) in speaking out about Blue Shield of CA denying medically necessary mental health care. Here is a little of our story:
Our daughter Kay (not her real name) is 13 and battling mental illness. She began showing symptoms at age 11, and she has been in crisis mode over most of the past year. She is currently in a residential facility receiving care for multiple issues including severe depression. Over the past year, she has been hospitalized many times, has been in 2 PHP programs, and was in 3 months of Eating Disorder residential treatment. After two weeks home in a PHP program, she was hospitalized again. From there, we transferred her to a residential facility. After 11 days of residential care, Blue Shield of CA denied further residential care, saying it was not “medically necessary” and recommended a lower level of outpatient care. We have been paying for all treatment costs out-of-pocket since Jan. 20. All of her treatment team believes residential care is medically necessary. It is heartbreaking to have our daughter away from home, and we would never choose to have her in a residential facility if it were not the only option.
