DWIGHT D EISENHOWER led us out of a devastating war as he was one of the main Allied commanders.
The War allowed full employment but there was nothing to spend it on since rationing was still happening due to the war effort, according to people I spoke with who remembered that era, most of them are dead now.
When the soldiers returned home there was enolugh wealth accummulated from the full employment that the 1950s were rather prosperous overall. People remembered the 1930s and were cautiously optimistic because they did not want another hideous economic depression that only WW II was able to remedy (which is allegedly why Pearl Harbor was allowed to happen). There was big religious faith in Middle America ( fear that god would allow another Depression and War) and conformity was the standard of the day.
Although we were allied with Stalin's USSR in WW II, we turned against them and the Cold War began.... Russia allegedly beat us in Space in 1956 with Sputnik --I will never forget the fear and panic of our neighbors. They feared a nuclear strike from space.
I can only speak for what i saw, heard and experienced at that time. Eisenhower offended no great populace and was reelected twice.
He did warn us about the military industrial complex who had profiteered relentlessly from WW II. They found out that war was profitable for them and they wanted more of it like a heroin addict wants more dope.
The people behind the Military Industrial complex were the usual cartel of banksters... Was it a coincidence they helped finance one of their own,Leon Trotsky who advocated 'permanent revolution" or war...
