Don, the victims of gun violence are not covered by the 2nd amendment, NRA. It is a law enforcement matter. It is the state of mind of the gun wielding person/s obsessed in killing people with guns. On the other hand, machetes, hammers, baseball bats, golf clubs too the same thing with the same results.
We already have a ton of laws on committing crimes, but we still see and hear about them.
Treat a gun as another tool you have in your garage. That is all it is nothing more nothing less..
Again I say, the human being who has his finger between the trigger and trigger guard has the power to do anything with it. No matter how many gun laws passed, the criminal who seeks a tool of destruction will get and use them to commit the crime.
Gun laws just make it harder for law-abiding citizens like me to get guns. Criminals are exempted from these gun laws, from my point of view.
Take the frame of mind of a criminal.. If you were to commit a crime with a gun, are you going to be stupid enough to buy it from gun store or gun show? All FFL dealers are regulated by the ATF and report to the ATF. at least I did when I was an FFL dealer. I would think, it is harder to get an FFL today.
Background checks are mandatory. Gun buying waiting periods are in place so that if you want to commit crime (including suicide) the waiting period was supposed to be a deterrent from you committing the crime according to authorities.
To me, all it is is common sense, good judgement and good gun control (control the gun you own).
There are at least 4.5M members of the NRA and I would say there are at least 4.5M guns are out there owned by responsible citizens.
BTW, I do believe that the right to own a gun should not trump the right to have your children grow up in peace and safety.
I used to hunt and ate the game I hunted, and so the use of the gun here is to hunt and eat the game you kill.
While we were working together, I wasn’t hunting any more because I felt sorry for the game I hunted. I moved on to competing with firearms which I and my family like doing. We killed cardboard patterns and no longer game.
On prisons, I thought the there is a conservative war on prisons and are against building more prisons.
