Donald Trump:
The Republicans’
Frankenstein Monster

For years, Republicans have courted bigots, and they weren't shy about it. They’ve spewed hate, and they’ve waged an ongoing slew of not-so-subtle racial attacks on President Obama from day one and nearly eight years since.

Trump is the Republican’s Frankenstein monster coming home to roost. Their race-oriented politics have paved the way for someone like Trump to come along. But now, they have the nerve to be embarrassed by him. This, even though he is the culmination of everything they’ve been preaching going back to Newt Gingrich, the Tea Party, Sarah Palin, and others.

The very reason Trump is popular is because he has taken the Republican playbook, and he is adding new chapters. He is saying what racists normally say in private. He also is making it politically correct to express racist views.

Many dirt-poor Americans, at the very bottom of the economic ladder, may not have much materially, but by golly, they sure do have their whiteness, and their prejudices. They also have a love affair with the rich, who often invest their millions in other countries despite their claims about loving America.

His entire campaign can be summarized in two words: insults and slurs. At his rallies, he has played the role of demagogue and bully. He has encouraged his "fans" to attack protesters. But this country was founded on the right to protest. Of course, his fans wouldn't know anything about that, because they probably don't read.

Ironically, if most parents, even bad parents, heard their children behaving like Trump, they would be appalled, and they would teach their children to show more humility, to respect others, and to stop acting like a spoiled brat and a bully. Trump supporters, however, don’t see the irony or the hypocrisy of their actions. How can you applaud behavior in Trump that you would not accept in your children?

In Chicago and Dayton, Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric, caught up with him. The clashes between his supporters and protesters can be traced right back to Trump's confrontational rhetoric. He even encouraged his supporters to attack protesters. But these protesters are not going to just roll over and allow themselves to be punched or roughed up. This thing could very well get out of control fast.

Trump's "fans" believe he's some kind of savior. But they're delusional. Moreover, nothing he has advocated addresses jobs for Americans. A major reason American workers are losing jobs is they have not increased their job skills or their education to keep up with foreign competition. But business also has to share some responsibility for this situation.

In other countries, businesses set up apprentice programs to train workers. In this country, businesses either allow jobs to go unfilled, or they import workers with the skills they need. Instead of dealing with these truths, Trump has waged a campaign befitting a demagogue.
Trump also believes he can shut down foreign plants and expect the people in those countries to continue to buy American products. The be such a “smart businessman” he certainly doesn’t understand the law of reciprocity. If we close plants in foreign countries, they just won’t buy our products, and the could trigger a trade war.

Fact is, the world is much more competitive than it used to be. Yet many of Trump’s supporters still think they can land good jobs with barely a high school education. They also think being white is the only qualification they will need in this new, competitive world. Again, they're delusional. New, tech jobs are going to people with the skills and not to people who simply have white skin.

Despite Trump fans’ tendency to use minorities as some sort of scapegoat, here's one fact all Americans should know. A large number of America's soldiers are minorities. Those soldiers are risking their lives in service to this country. Meanwhile, many of Trump's fans are content to slug beer and whine about making America great again. We can”make America great again” by reinstating the draft.

Then, the beer drinkers, who give lip service about loving America will have a chance to prove their love. Then, it won't just be the poor and minorities who are disproportionately serving in the military, everybody will have a fair shot at serving.
