Get off your damn phone, stop reading text or twitter or whatever while walking alone, anytime, but especially at night.
I would encourage every father and husband here to use this issue to drive home this message to daughters and wives. Their bull$#@! text/twitter can wait, whether walking or driving.
Dance Building is down by bus circle off San jacinto (north of Alumni Center). IT abuts Waller Creek and it's fairly wooded on one side. She'd walk down San Jacinto (south) from the Dance/Theater building and across the bus circle to the Alum Ctr if her intent was to walk, say to the Jester/Moore-Hill/Prater/newer dorms at Clark Field area. The only reason you might take the back side of the Alumni Center is that there's that bridge over Waller Creek that shortcuts up 21st towards GRE and PCL, where some of those dorms are.
I don't know, my guess is that she was dumped there somehow. Unless for some reason she was walking past midnight there, which is never a good idea.
Was most likely Winship. So ya, it is possible that was her preferred way back if she was heading to Jester/Sanjac/Brack. etc
The following is a statement from The University of Texas at Austin President Gregory L. Fenves sent to campus on April 6:
This is a difficult time for our community. There is a lot of justified anxiety, and I want to let you know that law enforcement is working hard to investigate this week’s homicide while campus leadership is actively addressing safety at UT Austin.
I have requested that the Austin Police Department, with its deep knowledge and experience, lead the investigation and coordinate closely with UTPD, University of Texas System police, the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Rangers. These law enforcement agencies are fully engaged and moving quickly. They have completed processing the crime scene; are working to identify the victim; and are focused on locating and apprehending a suspect in this unthinkable crime.
Law enforcement leaders are providing me with continual updates; and I will do the same for you, staying in touch to share information.
I have also taken additional measures to assure the safety of students, faculty, staff and visitors. If you were on campus last night, you may have seen extra officers and police vehicles from DPS and APD joining UTPD. These patrols will continue as needed. The university will provide extra van shuttles for students after their evening rehearsals near the Winship and Fine Arts buildings. We are reviewing other enhanced safety measures on campus.
Importantly, I ask all of you to always remain focused on your surroundings while walking; to never walk alone after dark; and to stay on clearly-marked and well-lit sidewalks.
Based on current information, and with these extra patrols, we will continue to keep the campus open and maintain the regular schedule of classes and events.
Our students come to The University of Texas at Austin to live, learn and prepare for life and do not expect to be confronted by tragedy during their years on campus.
Counseling is available for students at the counseling center in the Student Services Building, which will stay open until 7 p.m. this evening. Staff and faculty counseling services are available through the HealthPoint Employee Assistance Program.
Anyone with information about this crime should call university police at 512-471-4441.
As we respond to this tragedy, let us work collectively to support one another and to make our community stronger and safer.
Gregory L. Fenves

Paths to the back door where most of the dance classes occur is frankly pretty isolated and even moreso at night. Look between 24th and the Winship Drama building below. WHile there are lights, it's got a line of trees on one side and mechanical buildings on the other. she was found on the other side of the circle closer to the Texas-Exes center, but its not a stretch to think it may have started on either side before ending.
It is a homicide. Medical Examiner confirmed the body
Investigation:
Sunday - 9:30/9:45 Haruka left the Drama building, Haruka communicated with her friends where she was going (back to her dorm)
Monday 11:30 - Reported missing by roommates, police start looking and asking her friends
Tuesday - A more thorough search was conducted and remains found, UTPD calls the APD and DPS
Autopsy preformed it is a homicide. No identity known for suspect. There is a video.
Suspect was on a pink woman's bike, there is a $15,000 reward. He had a backpack on.
