Forever. That’s how long it seems the Republicans have been talking about Hillary Clinton’s emails. They operate on the premise that if you repeat a story, true or not, often enough, the public will believe it.
Given all the e-mail hoopla, you would think Clinton passed along highly sensitive military secrets to China, ISIS, Russia, or Iran. But you would be wrong. Completely wrong. Not even close wrong.
To be sure, had Clinton done something treasonous with her emails, the FBI and the Justice Department would have swooped in and filed charges. But they didn’t file charges because the whole email issue has been blown out of proportion for political gain by Republicans.
Here’s something to really think about.
• Had Clinton’s campaign manager been involved in shaky financial deals with Russian officials, the media would have been all over it, and investigations would have taken place. Moreover….
• Had Clinton appealed to Russia to hack her opponent’s campaign headquarters, that too would have been ripe for robust media coverage.
• Had Clinton praised Russian dictator, Vladimir Putin, while criticizing the American president in the same breath, most Americans would have considered that a low down dirty shame bordering on treason.
• Had Clinton offered a state attorney general a campaign contribution while under investigation by that same attorney general, the media would have been all over that story for months.
But the point is, neither Clinton nor her campaign staff did those things. However, Trump and his campaign did do those things.
Rather than pursuing those very serious news stories, the media essentially abdicated its tradition and kissed Trump’s rear end. The loser is the American public.
The public could have been better served and better informed had the media covered those stories with as much fervor as they covered Clinton’s emails.
