I think that the development and testing of delivery drones that could allow your Amazon order to arrive within 30 minutes of ordering is unnecessary and irresponsible. But please don't think that because I am against the drones, I must be a technophobe. They'll always be people that have an inherent fear of new technological developments, often for ridiculous and irrational reasons that amount to little more than "someone could use this technology to kill", like the guy that came on the Jeremy Vine show on BBC radio 2 today and said he was against the drones because "somebody could strap a bomb to one" - like we don't all drive cars and have sharp knives in our kitchen... I work for an innovation charity and generally support funding being ploughed into new research and development activities. Needless to say I am not a technophobe. I am against the drones essentially because they are being developed by an internet giant that cares more about profit than looking after its workers (and historically more than paying its taxes). I do have other concerns, some of which are being pointed out by the technophobes today such as safety, noise pollution etc. Proving that technophobes just like anyone else do sometimes actually have a good point to make. I also worry about the effect it will have on our high streets and the impersonalisation of it all. However, I can't help wonder whether my gut reaction to the news that our government will be working in partnership with a company to trial delivery drones for commercial purposes would have been different if the company in question was a small yet ambitious start up or a more socially responsible enterprise.
