Dear Governor Beshear,
I am writing you to ask you to consider vetoing a couple of line items on the new budget.
The Budget Spreadsheet document shows on lines 63 and 67 giving a total $400,000 to Lexington Speech & Hearing Center and to Heuser Hearing & Language Academy respectively over the next two years. KDE did not request this funding AND this is happening at the same time as you are cutting both Kentucky School for the Deaf and Kentucky School for the Blind funding. Also, on line 68 there is another $200,000 to be given to Visually Impaired Pre-school Services over two years. Again, not requested by KDE; your own agency that serves visually impaired students.
My point is that this appears to be spending tax dollars to support private businesses. This is compounded by the fact that the state is supposed to be supporting public education at its two state schools for deaf and blind students in Kentucky! The Kentucky Department of Education didn't even ask for this funding and it flies in the face of reason that you would cut your own department(s) for the sake of funneling taxpayer dollars to a for-profit entity. Our students will suffer!
I call for you to veto these items in the budget and restore full-funding to KSD and KSB!

Cordially,
