Jesse Williams made some very profound comments at the BET Awards show. But if we only focus on what others have and are doing to us, we aren't dealing with our complete reality.
For example, the greatest threat to Black life is coming from other Blacks; not the police. There have been about 10 major police shootings in recent years and about 5000 incidents of Blacks killing Blacks.
But we don't hear angry speeches about that. We tend to focus on the police killings as if that is the greater threat to black life; it is not. We shouldn't ignore the actions of the police, but we should focus on the more serious issue facing us.
If we really want to make meaningful progress, we must fight both our external and internal problems. In 2016, our internal problems, arguably, may very well be more serious than the external problems.
