In 2012, Thompson served as the first Humanitas Visiting Professor in Rhetoric and the Art of Public Persuasion at the University of Oxford.
On 14 August 2012, he was named CEO of The New York Times Company, effective November 2012.

He is married to Jane Blumberg,daughter of the late Dr. Baruch Samuel Blumberg who did graduate work in biochemistry at Balliol College, Oxford and earned his Ph.D there in 1957
Throughout the 1950s, Blumberg traveled the world taking human blood samples and studying the inherited variations in human beings, focusing on why some people contracted diseases in similar environments that others did not. In 1964,
He discovered the Hepatitis B vaccine which was tested on Chinese children.
