Numerically Controlled Formwork Construction

I admit to being fascinated by new technology. It’s often said that change is the one constant in life. You can try to resist it but worthwhile changes eventually become mainstream. I think that will be the case with numerically controlled formwork construction. It uses sophisticated software for design and CNC routers to cut out form pieces with incredible precision. The reason the technology will become increasingly popular is because architects and designers can create complex geometric forms, taking concrete beyond rectilinear shapes and flat planes.

You might think this technology amounts to another worthless expenditure of money and needless complexity. But we in the industry believe in the value of concrete as a building material and this technology increases the possibilities to be creative with it and use it more. You can read about this in the March issue of Concrete Construction. When you do, tell me your thoughts.
