Poile Zedek Synagogue engulfed in flames after fire breaks out in New Brunswick
NEW BRUNSWICK, New Jersey – Fire tore through a New Jersey synagogue Friday, sending thick smoke billowing over New Brunswick.
Poile Zedek Synagogue at 145 Neilson Street was fully-engulfed by 4:55 p.m. after catching fire some 25 minutes earlier.
It's not clear what sparked the fire, nor whether or not anyone was hurt.
The Orthodox Ashkenazic synagogue was built in 1923 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995, according to the website.
Poile Zedek was founded November 18, 1901 and was initially known as the Independent Laborers' Benefit Association, mostly comprised of congregants from Russia or Poland.
Roughly 100 families belong to the synagogue.
