I’m currently reading an intriguing book entitled, The Rise and Fall of Gangsters in America, by Albert Fried. It’s a brief historical survey of the subject, which existed in the Lower East Side, NYC, beginning in the late 1800’s.
If there’s one thing that comes through loud and clear it’s this: Gangsters didn’t fall, they morphed from bad guys to good guys. In other words, the gangsters of yesteryear are today’s financiers, businessmen, public officials, and bureaucrats. Their system of shake-down is the government, and their thugs are all the police and military that they have at their disposal.
The fact is, we don’t live in a slave-state, as I formerly supposed. Instead, we live in a protection-racket-nation. I believe this is the new model for the new age, being built from the best materials and methods of all prior ages.
