The Turkish military sees itself as the guardian of Turkey's secular system, The New York Times reports. Past coups occurred in 1960, 1971 and 1980. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has blamed the attempt on supporters of Muslic cleric Fethullah Gulen, who lives in Pennsylvania. However, Reuters reports a U.S.-based group close to Gulen condemned any military intervention. At this point, it is unclear if the coup attempt will be successful.
