The court of appeal in Port Harcourt has granted leave to the four convicted principal officers of Ahoada East legislative assembly to appeal against their sentence by a Port Harcourt high court.

The four councilors were sentence to three months in prison with hard labour and an option of fine by Justice George Omereji for disobeying court order.

The lead justice of the appellate court Justice Ijembi Eko gave the councilors seven days leave to appeal against the conviction.

The legal representative of the councilors Ifedayo Adedipe told the court that the trial judge of the lower court denied knowledge of an appeal against the judgment and went ahead to pass the sentence against his client.

In his own submission, counsel to the impeached vice chairman of Ahoada East local government Agent Ihua-Maduenyi opposed the application for an appeal against the conviction of the councilors.

Correspondent Emeka Idika reports that the court of appeal adjourned till 11th of June 2013 to hear the appeal against the conviction of the four councilors of Ahoada East.
