Trump and his taxes © 2016

He earns a thousand times more than you
but pays a thousand times less than you.

So, how you like him now?

The New York Times reported the other day what many Americans had suspected, that Trump had something he would prefer to hide in his taxes. The Times reported that Trump paid little or no federal taxes, presumably for 18 years.

During the recent debate, Trump said paying no federal taxes made him smart. But as Hillary Clinton countered during the debate, if paying no federal taxes made Trump smart, “What does it say for American citizens who do pay federal taxes?”

Needless to say, the American government, the military, roads, Social Security, Medicare and other services and benefits rely on the payment of federal taxes. How can the government, states and cities provide services to citizens if people don’t pay their fair share of taxes?

Here’s a takeaway: If the U.S. Tax Code is so unbalanced and would allow wealthy people, like Trump, to avoid paying federal taxes for up to 18 years, and this is considered legal, the public should be outraged and demand tax code change. The Times’ disclosure leaves us with two conclusions:

1. The Tax Code needs to be changed.

2. If the wealthy are not paying their fair share of federal taxes, it is the poor and middle class who are carrying the tax burden.

If Trump really wants to “Make America Great Again,” he and the wealthy can start by paying their fair share of federal taxes.

As for the average American, they should be outraged. This is one issue that demands fairness and change.
