http://bit.ly/3x8wFh Here’s a peculiar rock-and-roll controversy for you. Matthew Friedberger, of the Brooklyn band Fiery Furnaces, has attacked Radiohead for “brazenly and arbitrarily associating yourself with things that you know people consider cool.” He was alluding to Radiohead’s Internet single “Harry Patch,” a tribute to the late World War I veteran. Friedberger seemed to think, however, that the song was really about Harry Partch, the pioneering microtonal composer. (He later denied any such confusion and said that he had been “riffing.”) In what may or may not be a related development, Beck, who was casually dissed in one of Friedberger’s pronouncements, has released a song called … “Harry Partch.” Radiohead has no comment, and is listening to Ligeti, Szymanowski, Dutilleux, and Adès (see October 18th). Sometimes pop music is so damn high-falutin’ I can’t hardly understand it. (Via Daniel Stephen Johnson.)
