Americans tend to have short memories. Some have short memories on purpose. They conveniently forget what it was like in 2009 when President Obama took office. Long story short, the Republicans left a mess.
Here’s a refresher. The economy was in shambles. The last time the economy was that bad was the Great Depression. The Republicans got the country involved in an unnecessary and costly war. That war took many lives and wounded even more soldiers. It lasted over 10 years and cost the United States $6 trillion, including services to wounded veterans. That was nearly $1 billion a day. By getting the U.S. involved in that unnecessary war, Republican strategies caused the destabilization of the Mideast power structure and paved the way for Iran and ISIS to emerge.
When Obama took office, the housing market had collapsed. The stock market had tanked and your 401(k) was in trouble. The Dow Jones Industrial Average had plunged below 9000 points. The banking industry also was in trouble. Major banks and financial institutions were on the verge of going under.
At the same time, the auto industry was on life support. Chrysler and GM seemed headed for closure. Gas prices were heading towards $4 and $5 a gallon depending on where you live. The employment rate was dismal. Millions of Americans didn’t have health insurance.
Look at those issues today. The economy is stronger. The housing market has come back. The auto industry has roared back and GM, Ford and Chrysler have hired thousands of new employees. Gas prices are below $2 in many states. The United States no longer imports most of its oil. It is now an oil exporter. The banking industry and the financial markets are stronger; so is your 401(k). The Dow Jones Industrial Average is over 17,000 point. That’s good news for your 401(k). The nation no longer is spending billions a day in Iraq and soldiers aren’t dying every day. Today is much better than then.
Republican policies created those problems, Democratic policies resolved them. Today, ISIS is on everybody’s mind, and the government has strategies in place to deal with ISIS. Bear in mind, this is the same administration that tracked down and took out Osama bin laden. Remember him?
Presidential hopefuls like Donald Trump talk a good game all the while appealing to the worst in us. But it’s all talking points with no real plan behind them.
No president is perfect on all issues, and the president isn’t perfect on all issues. Some people think the president is too calm and too cool. They evidently want a screaming, chest-pounding president. However, Obama is more like Mr. Spock of Star Trek; cool, logical and not given to hysterical behavior. Ask yourself. Is the country better off today than it was in 2008 before this man took office?
