Hearing the engine of the jeep sputter slightly before shutting off causes me to sigh softly in relief, knowing that now I've caught Steve's attention by announcing that I can do more than simply let him drive off into the woods in hopes that he'll be able to succeed in a rescue mission by himself.
"Do more? Like what?" He asks, eyes studying me. But I didn't plan to tell him everything right now, for getting Howard to fly into enemy territory isn't exactly a definite. Once Steve slides over, I myself climb into the driver's seat, bracing my hands on the wheel, going to turn the engine back on when he stops me with what he continues on to say, "Peggy, I know you don't want me to go, but I have to. It isn't even just about my friend. It's about all of those men now. They expect someone to be coming for them to get them out. They deserve to be rescued and besides, I won't let Schmidt kill anyone else."
Hands paused on the keys in the ignition, I look up at Steve, seeing the true extent of his determination, his drive to save these men even if his friend wasn't one of them. But what stops me more is that I recognize that Steve has seen right through me, has seen the panic that burned inside of me for the thought that he was going to go in there alone. And I wonder, for just a moment, if that matters to him. That if my worry affected him any, if he cared. I start to recall his talk of the right partner... But I shake the thought off just as it comes on. This wasn't a time to be thinking like that, to think anything of Steve other than in a professional manner.
Able to regain control of my emotions, I turn my gaze back to the path before me, starting the jeep and feeling it come to life beneath my hands before I pull away from its parking spot, headed towards the far side of the camp where Howard had hopefully been able to station. I don't answer Steve, not yet, unsure what words to use, how to explain it to him, how I got here, what the plan forming in my mind is.
"So, if you want to help, get me close. I'll do the rest." I can still feel his eyes on me, searching, curious, wondering just what was going through my mind.
So, finally, I take a deep breath and respond, eyes still facing forward, "That's exactly what I'm planning to do, Steve. I was supposed to stay in London with Howard Stark, but when I heard that you would be in Italy, I convinced him to fly me here," I glance over at him before quickly adding, "... and with Colonel Phillips here there was more of a chance that I could be permanently transferred here as well, as there hasn't been much going on in London. So, I'm hoping Howard is up for one more favor, and we'll fly you all the way in, giving some time to plan out exactly how all of this will occur, as well." With that, I pull up to Howard's tent, turning off the engine and turning to Steve to see if he's up to speed yet, simply waiting for his response before I dare exit the jeep.
But of course, with the sound of our approach, Howard Stark slips out of the tent, hands in the pockets of his trousers, a sly grin spreading across his lips, "Ah, Agent Carter," he says, his voice like velvet before he turns to Steve, his tone changing just like that, "And Captain America. What do I owe the pleasure?"
